EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
